Project Description
The Perch is a 660 sq. ft. home addition floating above an existing bungalow located in Austin, TX. This unique new space rests atop 4 steel columns that are anchored in the bungalow’s walls for lateral support. The color palette is contemporary, yet earthy. Windsor's Pinnacle casement, awning and direct set windows were selected in the burnt pumpkin exterior finish to complement the other building materials. The windows and sliding door were carefully placed to provide a generous amount of ambient light.
Unique Requirements/Solutions
The owners wanted to remain in their home during construction and to keep their backyard intact without disturbing the mature landscape. To achieve these goals, shop-built steel was craned into place to minimize disruption to the site. The design consisted of vaulted ceilings with tilted angles to provide visual interest and the impression of expansive space. The split-level form was selected to create storage and areas for mechanical equipment.
Comments from Project Associates
The Perch added flexible, functional space for the owners within a very compact area. The design solved multiple site constraints and accentuated the foundational bungalow below by setting itself back from it and hovering near it without disturbing it. The playful use of material and the color palate, derived from nature, provide efficiency, economy, and serenity.
