Contemporary Products Add Modern Appeal to Farm House Design

Roger Macpherson, of Macpherson Construction and Design, had a lot of personal influence on the design of this modern farmhouse on the shores of Lake Washington in Seattle. Macpherson Construction specializes in building custom homes in lakefront communities in the Seattle, Washington area.

The stark color scheme of a white structure with black windows creates a striking design. By combining two different window and door types they provided a subtle but noticeable design element. A steel pivot door with a direct set transom gives a contemporary look to this oversized entry system. When you enter the home, the first thing you see is a massive multi-slide door that overlooks the boat dock and a strong contemporary vibe is evident.

The color scheme on the interior is the same as the exterior with white walls and black windows. The black prefinished interiors add graphic detail to the white walls and allowed the builder to create the look and feel that the homeowner desired while maintaining their budget.
The contemporary interior was achieved by using a 90-degree dry wall return. This precise edge with the black windows and narrow jambs created a crisp, distinctive look. The window frames are thin which provides the industrial look of a steel window, yet they have the performance and energy efficiency of an aluminum clad wood window. This was achieved by using a standard 4-9/16" jamb with a 2x6 (or wider) wall construction.

The exterior of this home features narrow stile French swinging doors. So from the exterior the modern theme is muted and the elevation of the home maintains a traditional farm house look. This home is a perfect example of how contemporary products can be used to provide a modern look from the interior while preserving a traditional style from the exterior, which is a frequent requirement of design review committees. Congratulations to Macpherson design for creating a home that has achieved that perfect balance.
