Over the past few years, millwork companies large and small have been downsizing to better match the current economy. This is especially true for any business in the new construction market, where we have seen dramatic declines in activity and revenue in all areas of the country. Tough decisions have been made, and some good employees have been lost through this process. However, at this point in time, your company hopefully has your best people and top performers in place.
These individuals are the foundation of the future growth and success for your company. For this reason, your current employees are more valuable than ever before. The sales team has probably worked more hours for less pay. The support staff – operations, administration, etc. – has probably been asked to step up and learn new responsibilities previously handled by other employees. As the market recovers, all businesses will again be thinking about adding employees as needed to properly service this increase in business.
Now is a good time to take inventory of your current situation. How are you recognizing the key contributions of your team today? There are many options for you to consider, and most cost little or no money.
Larger companies have many opportunities. For example, you may want to consider an “employee of the month” club, with the ability for fellow employees to nominate someone they work with.
You can also consider establishing a “salesperson of the month” award for those individuals who helped make the biggest difference in revenue and results.
A company newsletter or posting that recognizes milestones such as service anniversaries, attendance, and safety is always a good idea.
An owner formally acknowledging and recognizing someone who has improved a process or helped save money sends a very strong message throughout the organization.
Smaller companies may need to rely more on the personal touch of a manager or owner. This can be something like a group lunch or dinner for a job well done, or just calling an individual into your office to make sure they know you appreciate their efforts and contributions.
And, no matter what size your business is, make sure to frame and post any positive customer letters and also pictures from successfully completed projects, highlighting any individuals directly involved.
It is a proven fact that all individuals need and want to be recognized for their work. With some individuals, a sincere “thank you” from their owner or manager is all they may need. Others may need more, so make sure you are thinking about how you can best recognize your best employees in your current role and company culture.
