In January 2010, The Department of Energy (DOE) initiated a change to the Energy Star criteria for windows and doors. In addition to this change, the DOE also announced future changes or improvements to the Energy Star criteria for windows and doors. During 2010, the DOE turned over Energy Star responsibility to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Since 2010, the EPA has been working on the establishment of the new Energy Star criteria.
In July of this year, the EPA announced its initial draft criteria for the next phase of Energy Star, or Version 6.0. The tables below show the current Energy Star criteria as well as the EPA’s proposed Version 6.0 criteria for windows and doors. As with the 2010 criteria, windows are still separated by the four climate zones for U-Value and SHGC, while doors have the same U-Value and SHGC values regardless of geographic location, but are separated by the type and size of glass in the door panel.
Windsor has been working for months staying ahead of these changes by reviewing and analyzing all products to determine those that will comply and those needing further review. We will continue to monitor the progress of the Version 6.0 criteria and keep you posted with future updates as to any changes to program criteria and implementation dates.
