WEST DES MOINES, Iowa (Jan. 4, 2010) — A deserving St. Paul, Minn., daycare provider, her family, and the children she cares for have a sparkling view of their vibrant, multicultural neighborhood through new Windsor Windows after “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” revealed its latest project on Sunday’s national broadcast.
Structural concerns had threatened to close the doors of the daycare in a crumbling 1896 three-story home where Sandy Morris and her two children, Catricia and Mychal, lived before. Now Windsor’s Pinnacle Clad Double Hung windows will keep blustery Minnesota elements out, long after the memorable surprise door knock seen here Sunday on ((WOI MyABC5)).
Greg Hancock, Windsor Windows regional sales manager, was among the thousands of volunteers who replaced the Morris’ 113-year-old home in just 96 hours for the first program of the new year. Hancock, along with Windsor’s distributors Metro Millwork in Edina, Minn., and Minnesota Exteriors Inc., Osseo, Minn., plus several other crews, pitched in on window installation. Metro had provided millwork for Minnesota’s first “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” project — a 2007 build for the Swenson-Lee family in Minnetonka, Minn. — and brought Windsor into the discussion for the Morris home this season.
To meet the program’s quick-change schedule, the aluminum-clad wood double-hung window units were delivered to a prefinisher and picked up on a Windsor truck to be driven to the project site. With characteristic “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” magic, rough openings in the new Morris home were plumbed, leveled and squared — and the new windows installed, sealed and insulated — under cover of the night. “The install began at 10 p.m. and finished up at 2 a.m.,” Hancock reported.
“It was inspiring to be a part of the temporary community that sprang to life and constructed a house from the ground up in just four days’ time,” Hancock added. “The daycare in the new home will stand for many years to support the diverse community around the Morris family’s neighborhood.”
Indeed, Windsor’s donation of new windows will maintain the warmth of the holidays for the daycare, an island of culture where Hispanic American Sandra Morris shares her Spanish language and the Puerto Rican tradition of togetherness.
